Lecture: Is China Reshaping South Asia by the BRI?

On 14th October 2019, Professor LIN Minwang in the Institute of International Studies at Fudan University delivered a lecture titled “Is China Reshaping South Asia by the BRI? in China-CEE Institute. The lecture is hosted by Dr. LI Gang, Research Fellow in China-CEE Institute and Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS). The attendants come from CASS in Beijing, the universities and research institutions in Budapest. After the lecture, Prof. Lin answered the questions and had an intensive discussion with the attendants.

In the lecture, Prof. Lin illustrated the background of China’s proposing the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) under the framework of China’s New Diplomacy. Besides BRI, he also mentioned and talked about the other initiatives of China’s New Diplomacy such as the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), Afghanistan Peace Talk, Middle East, and so on.

As for the questions “what is New in China’s diplomacy?”. Prof. Lin listed three points. Firstly, China has begun bold attempts to provide regional public goods as a responsible power instead of a free rider. Secondly, China reshapes its neighboring environment, not just adapt to its. Thirdly, China pursues a pattern of common interests and collaboration throughout the international community.

In the last part of the lecture, Prof. Lin talked about the impacts of the BRI on South Asia.
