Summer 2023

  1. Introduction to China-CEE Institute

The China-CEE Institute is established by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, registered as a non-profit corporation in Budapest, Hungary. The China-CEE Institute promotes partnerships with academic institutions in Hungary and other European countries. It welcomes researchers in European countries to conduct joint research, lecture, and publications. Our mission is to deepen mutual understanding and facilitate academic exchanges between China and Europe.

  1. The Topics of Working Papers 2023
  • Challenges and Prospects for European Security Order in the New Geopolitical Environment.

The outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict has brought about major changes in Europe’s geopolitical environment. To cope with these changes, European countries are revising their security strategies, especially those in Central and Eastern Europe, Northern Europe, and Germany. These changes and adjustments in national security strategies are reshaping the European security landscape and have multidimensional impacts on transatlantic security cooperation (such as NATO).

Thus, these national security strategies’ objectives, policy shifts, outcomes, and effects warrant thorough analysis and research.

  • Analysis of the Changing Balance of Power within the European Union in the Process of European Integration

After the Russia-Ukraine conflict outbreak, the EU adjusted its foreign policy, leading to significant changes in the political landscape. As a result, Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries have gained further influence in the decision-making process of the European Union.

Does this mean that there is a power shift from west to east in the process of European integration? What is the new trend of Central and Eastern European countries’ involvement in European integration? What kind of impact do CEE countries have on EU policies in areas such as democratic reforms, rule of law, refugee issues, green economy, and digital sovereignty? What kind of influence and role will CEE countries play in the EU relations with international major powers such as the United States, Russia and China? What are the main internal and external factors that motivate the EU enlargement? And what are the chances for the Western Balkan countries to join the EU in the future?

  • The Process, Models, Challenges and Prospects of European Modernization

European countries have been leaders in modernization, and their development models, paths, and prospects are worth in-depth analysis. This theme framework includes the following aspects:

-The post-modernization development paths and models in Europe since the 1990s (focusing on sustainable, digital, green, and innovative forms of modernization);

-The development paths of modernization or industrialization in different regions of Europe since the 1990s (Western Europe, Northern Europe, Southern Europe, Baltic countries, and Central and Eastern Europe);

– The challenges and future prospects of modernization development in Central and Eastern European countries after the transformation.
